About the Curator/Artist
Biography
Born in Macau SAR; Based in Toronto
Hio Lam Kylie Sio (she/her) is a holder of a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Criticism and Curatorial Practice from OCAD University. Kylie is an interdisciplinary artist who loves exploring new ways to engage with viewers.
Intention
What we pay attention to is very minimal, while there are a massive number of objects that we have degraded their values.
In Kylie’s practices, her works mostly emphasize on uniqueness and unconventional perspectives. As she has a background in literature, she gives roles to all of her works and she takes place as the narrator. Her works are metaphorical and emotional; therefore, she doesn’t have any specific art-making techniques but the most significant material that she will apply is her feeling right at the moment. Visually beautiful objects are never the subject matter that she is concerned with, yet her attentions are always dragged to something minor - trashes, unwanted objects and disposals…etc. These objects were once produced with purposes and the designer’s effort, they should have value. Therefore, in Kylie’s works, every neglected object is playing the individual role of a protagonist.
And same as real life, the world is a big stage.
Without a minor character, the protagonist will never be successful; Without a supporting role, the plot will never run smoothly.
